We have a huge problem with kgnats in the roots of our hydroponic plants. It appesars we have a total infestation. They are killing the roots and therefore the plants too.

What can we use on the roots of the plants?

Fungus Gnats
by: Larry

If by 'gnats' you are referring to 'fungus gnats', these are small flies whose larvae can damage the roots of seedlings.

Organic ways to eradicate an infestation would be to introduce nematodes or parasitic wasps that can be found in many online garden stores.

Or you can mix up an organic repellent spray to kill or drive off the little bugs. There are effectice recipes on this site - especially those with neem oil.

You could also place a small container of apple cidar vinegar or wine near the base of the plant and the larvae will find it to feed and drown.

Another way is to sprinkle some sand around the base of the plant down to 1/4 inch which seems to drive them off.

And these remedies will work for many types of pests and not just gnats. Just the fact you have gnats could indicate a more serious condition such as 'damping-off' or 'root rot' which occur in overwatered plants.
